Improve Soil Health, Plant Health and Yields on Your Organic Farm - PhycoTerra®

Back To PhycoTerra® Blog

As an organic farmer, you have less tools available to fight common farming setbacks compared to non-organic farmers. Whether you’re knee deep in weeds, battling bugs or cursing the weather, you can’t turn to synthetics to assist you when the going gets tough.

A solution to many of these problems (and more) may be at your feet. An abundant, diverse, active and healthy soil microbiome can fight disease, improve nutrient cycling and moisture-holding capacity, while also reducing abiotic stress and supporting plant health. All of which help crops reach their full yield potential, no matter what the season brings

The best way to get your soil working for you is to feed beneficial soil microbes a nutrient dense food source, like PhycoTerra® Organic Soil Amendment

A soil amendment ideal for organic farmers

What is PhycoTerra Organic Soil Amendment?

PhycoTerra Organic Soil Amendment is a nature sourced, OMRI-listed soil amendment that feeds beneficial fungi and bacteria in all types of soil.

Feeding soil microbes is essential on any farm given that 75% of soil microbes are either dormant or inactive due to starvation. To put them to work, they need a nutrient rich food source. Our organic soil amendment is derived from our unique strain of microalgae to provide hungry microbes with nutrients they need.

Grown in sunny Gilbert, Arizona, this proprietary microalgae food source for the microbiome supports healthier crops and healthier yields–so you can farm forever.

Unique Benefits for Organic Productions

Organic productions have significantly more hoops they must jump through to produce crops and retain certification. Without synthetic opportunities to address common farming setbacks, healthy soil is your best line of defense. It’s also your best offense, given that healthier soil supports healthier plants, and better yields.

To build up your soil health, organic farmers need to feed beneficial soil microbes. PhycoTerra Organic Soil Amendment provides organic farmers with a wide range of benefits–all of which are either good for farmers, good for soil, or good for yields.

Ease of Use

Our organic soil amendment integrates seamlessly into existing crop input and fertilizer programs. It’s shelf-stable for up to two years and has minimal storage requirements. The product itself is made of microalgae, meaning it won’t clog screens upon application.

Disease-Suppressive Soil

Creating disease-suppressive soil requires a healthy, active, diverse and abundant soil microbiome.

All pathogens need three things to strike: a conducive environment, a virulent pathogen and a susceptible host. While you cannot control if pathogens are in your soil, and a susceptible host is always present when there are crops in a field, you can create an environment that isn’t conducive for pathogens.

The first step is feeding the beneficial bacteria and fungi in your soil.

Weed Control

Every grower wants their sunlight, water and nutrients to go to their crops. So weeds, in one way or another, must be addressed.

Tilling, flaming and hand-weeding are all common practices on organic farms for weed management. Unfortunately, each of these practices disturb the soil, hurting soil health and yields over time. There isn’t a way to disturb the soil without disturbing the soil microbiome.

If it becomes essential to remove weeds in a soil disruptive way, it’s equally essential to restore beneficial microbes post-disturbance. A carbon-rich food source is exactly what they need to wake up and rebuild your soil health.

Healthier Soil

By feeding dormant microbes already present in the soil, PhycoTerra Organic Soil Amendment enhances biological activity by up to 33X. When soil microbes are active, they improve soil structure for all soil types via improved aggregates. Better aggregates increase water-holding capacity. It also improves nutrient availability and nutrient utilization.

As a broader practice, supporting soil microbes and improving soil health contributes to long-term soil regeneration.

Healthier Yields

Healthier soils give seeds the ample opportunity to become healthier plants, and produce healthier yields. These crops are often also more resilient throughout the season, including later in the year. This means you’ll have better standability come harvest time.

Soils with healthy soil microbiomes also see:

  • Stronger root systems
  • Better water use
  • Improve NPK availability
  • Increased nutrient uptake

PhycoTerra Organic soil amendment allows growers to optimize their yield potential, across a wide range of crops, in a wide range of soil, while delivering a sustainable ROI.

CROP ROI YIELD DIFFERENCE

Organic farmers: Support beneficial soil microbes

What does it mix with?

PhycoTerra Organic has a high mixability. Add it to your herbicide, fungicide, pesticide or adjuvants. Whether added to organic fertilizers, compost, or a cover crop program, our soil amendment offers a soil-first solution rooted in performance and sustainability.

What’s in PhycoTerra Organic Soil Amendment?

Our soil amendment is made from a proprietary strain of microalgae to create the most nutritious meal possible for soil microbes. It includes a balance of proteins, lipids and carbs. Our patented strain of microalgae feeds a more abundant and diverse set of biology than competitors.

Our product is high in nutrients and low in ingredients like ash or sugar. Ash isn’t a usable source of energy for microbes, and sugar isn’t a sustainable nutrient

Think of high-sugar products like a candy bar for lunch, and our product like a chicken sandwich. Which do you want for lunch during harvest time? A sandwich is the easy choice to get the job done. Just like you, your soil microbes want a full meal and balanced diet, too.

When to Apply

Apply pre-plant, at planting, and crop protection timings, including pre-plant broadcast, pre-emergence, in-furrow or 2×2, pre-emergence, sidedress, Y-drop, and side banned. You can also apply via fertigation.

PhycoTerra Organic can be applied using standard equipment.

Recommended Rates

Apply 1 quart to 1 gallon per acre depending on crop type. For recommended rates for a specific crop, visit our crop trial results page. Select your crop and review the recommended applications there.

For example, potatoes are 2 to 4 quarts per acre.

Compatibility

As mentioned above, Phycoterra Organic has a high mixability and no found incompatibilities. Mix with organic compost teas, fertilizer, biological inoculants or any other organic inputs used on your farm.

Beneficial microbes on your organic farm need support to support you.

Post Harvest Application

At the end of a growing season, farmers must find ways to address the crop residue left behind from harvest. As mentioned above, methods like tillage and burning can damage the soil microbiome. Regenerative agriculture practices also encourage farmers to leave the soil covered to protect the microbiome.

A new innovative solution includes using PhycoTerra Organic to feed microbes to break down crop residue faster than it would naturally on its own. This helps growers:

  1. Provide a slow nutrient release for crops in the spring
  2. Reduce crop residue in field
  3. Plant the next crop up to three days earlier via warmer soil temperature
  4. Achieve regenerative farming practice standards

It’s the easiest way to turn your crop trash into crop cash.

Get the Upper Hand on Your Organic Farm

Farming is a lot like playing cards. There’s a good chance you know every card that’s in the deck, but you have no idea what will be dealt to you and when. What you can control is what you do with your hand. And taking care of your soil is like stacking your deck with a couple of aces before the game gets started.

So stack your hand with healthy soil, while keeping compliant with organic standards. Learn more about PhycoTerra® Organic Soil Amendment.
