Vice President of Algal R&D

Dr. Matthew Saunders is VP of Algal Research and Development at Heliae. Dr. Saunders’ expertise is in molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics and high throughput screening approaches, which is applied towards Heliae’s microalgae strain selection and strain improvement efforts. Dr. Saunders has led the selection and/or development of elite microalgae strains for industrial scale production with a variety of improved traits (e.g. plant growth promoting properties, biomass productivity, temperature tolerance, pest resistance).

Dr. Saunders has postdoctoral and graduate training from the departments of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Chicago and at the University of Arizona where he specialized in Genetics and Bioinformatics. Dr. Saunders is author and co-author on over 20 peer-reviewed research articles and patents.
